Research Assistant (BESECURE)

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB
1. In line with the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust’s (SLCT) BESECURE project, conduct research and case study activities to develop a comprehensive report on security issues and best practice policies in Lewisham
2. To work with the Programme Manager to ensure that the project deliverables are met
Salary level:
£18,000 – £24,000 PA (pro-rata)
Hours:
18 hours a week (2 days / part time)

The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust is a national education charity. We transform the lives of young people and aim to achieve real social change by:

Background to the BESECURE Project
The BESECURE project aims to support local policymakers in the creation, enhancement and implementation of security policies in urban zones. Urban security is a critical subject within the EU, but dealt with in widely different manners.
The BESECURE project works towards a better understanding of urban security through examination of different European urban areas. BESECURE collects and analyses best practices in the area of urban security through case studies in eight urban areas throughout Europe (Lewisham being one). By building a comprehensive set of indicators for urban security, along with best practices from different urban areas, important cues about the state of security in urban regions using factors such as social makeup, economic state, crime numbers and the public perception of security become apparent. Based on this valuable knowledge, BESECURE works towards the creation of a resource database that supports local policy makers to assess the impact of their practices, and improve their decision making.
Job Description
- Supporting the Programme Manager with researching primary and secondary data relevant to security issues in Lewisham (socio-economic, political structures, crime figures, urban landscape)
- Supporting the Programme Manager with researching security policies and best practice examples in Lewisham
- Inputting data into prescribed BESECURE templates
- Assisting the programme manager in analysing and evaluating data
- Conducting case study interviews and interactions with local stakeholders
- Collecting relevant media stories on security issues in Lewisham
- Writing reports based on research findings
Personal Specification
Essential:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Confident presentation skills
- Strong organisational skills including the ability to work to tight deadlines
- Sound IT skills including Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint
- Excellent ability to conduct primary and secondary research on safety and security issues
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Desirable:
- Educated to degree level or equivalent
- Interest in urban planning, policy design, criminal justice or community development
Personal Qualities:
- Ability to relate positively to and engage with a wide range of people
- Strong self-motivation and flexible team player
- Ability to multi-task and prioritise tasks
- Ability to remain calm under pressure

Location:
- Based at Stephen Lawrence Centre, Deptford.
