Black History: A Universal Human History Aspiration for Justice

Bunch
Conversation with Director Lonnie Bunch on Thursday 11 October 2018 18.30 in the UCL Cruciform Building

How should we best observe Black History Month in a multicultural democracy in the 21st Century?

Is Black History human history?

What are the implications for culture, for education and for global society?

Black Cultural Archives, Facing History and UCL Culture are pleased to invite you to join us for a civil dialoguer to celebrate Black History Month with our Director Lonnie Bunch, Smithsonian National African American Museum of Culture and History. The narrative of the African-American struggle for freedom, liberation and belonging represent a universal human aspirations for freedom and liberty.

How should we best document and memorialise the history of that experience in a cultural institution, how should we teach “Black History” so that it is full integrated into our curriculums and how should it be woven into a human history of liberation and affirming human dignity. Dr. Bunch will speak to the museum teams efforts to interpret this human history and to invite citizens of a multiracial and multicultural democracy to come see, experience and reflect on its living legacy.

Together we will explore what lessons may we draw on in the United Kingdom today in our continuing struggle to build a pluralistic democracy of shared values, human dignity, civility, inclusion and respect for all.
