Join us as we host Amma Asante here at the Greater London Authority as part of our Black History Month programme. Amma Asante is a BAFTA award-winning writer/director. Amma attended the Barbara Speake stage school in London, where
she trained as a student in dance and drama.
In 2017, Amma was named an MBE by Queen Elizabeth in the Birthday Honour’s list, for services to film as a writer and director. She is a member of the American Academy of Motion Picture, Arts and Sciences, has twice been elected to the council of The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). Her portrait was featured in the National Portrait Gallery as part of its ‘Modern Muses’ exhibition and today her portrait hangs in the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York in the ‘Legacy of Black Achievement ’exhibition. Lord Bragg centered on Amma and her career to date in The South Bank Show: Amma Asante for his Sky Arts TV series in 2017.
This year City Hall’s Black History Month (BHM) programme aligns with the behindeverygreatcity (#BEGC) plan. It includes a series of events at City Hall which highlight historic and current achievements of Black women in London, exploring the role of women in conserving and narrating Black histories.
As we celebrate the 100th year since some women won the right to vote, it’s important to recognise the ongoing fight for equality of women from every background. Black History Month will highlight what this meant and continues to mean for Black women.
