Denise Brown will be joining our
‘The business of fashion’ talk at Birkbeck, University of London.
Fashion Changed My Life is run by qualified fashion stylist, designer and tutor Denise Brown. After ten years of working in the industry Denise decided that she wanted to set up her own fashion courses, inviting young people and adults to explore the wonderful world of fashion and equipping them with a range of skills specific to the industry.
The name Fashion Changed My Life represents a very personal journey to Denise, as it captures the essence of her very own narrative: ‘Fashion has been the one constant throughout my life. For one reason or another there was a lack of nurturing and love in my childhood. But once I discovered fashion I embraced it, harnessing my skills with all the love that I was lacking growing up”.
A women’s wear graduate from the world renowned London College of Fashion, Denise Brown acquired a strong sense of identity through fashion from the first time she picked up a needle and thread to hand sew her own outfit, aged just 12. Realizing her life’s purpose and embracing it, Denise developed her styling techniques in both menswear and womenswear, exceeding the industry boundaries and expectations. Denise has experience styling some of the biggest names in pop culture including Kanye West, Rihanna, Eliza Doolittle and Noisettes. Denise’s international clientele also includes MTV, GMTV, Nickelodeon, New Era, Polaroid. Denise has also had the opportunity to work with other prominent magazines/newspapers such as Time Out, NME, Lurie, Pride, The Guardian, Fantasic And Men, Fault, Noise and The Metro.
Denise taught fashion design in the London Borough of Lambeth since 2004. During this nine-year period Denise worked for Flipside Project alongside the Metropolitan Police, attending various youth clubs in Lambeth. Denise is also proud of her work that she has done with the Prince’s Trust, delivering a one-week workshop to 16-19 year old NEETS. She has also taught Fashion Styling at CNWL, Fashion design at Royal Court Theatre, customising garments at Postitive Activities For Young People, and various other fashion courses Brent Summer Uni, Wembley Community Centre, Ground Works, Surestart Plus, The Davis School and Burnside Schools.
In 2007 Denise embarked on the launch of her successful clothing label Don’t Judge Me- a label based on her struggles, accomplishments and life lessons. The launch was a triumph, actively conveying the message of ‘perseverance through misconception’ and winning the hearts of Mariah Carey and Tulisa from N Dubz, whom both wore the Don’t Judge Me collection. Denise’s innovative label rapidly captured the interest of magazines around the world, allowing her to showcase her personal and original style. To date, a youtube video of Denise’s work has generated nearly six million hits.
